Heads Up: 511E's (A Little Rough Though)

Pair of 511E's they are a little rough though one corner chipped on one but price is pretty cheap for the E's. IMO I think the 511E's are a nice sounding large format (288,299,291,Etc..) horn.And an added benefit is that they aren't so huge that they will fit in a modest to small sized room.

Wow--those are in Albion, NY. That's about forty five minutes from my house. Albion is a tiny "hick" town population 8,000. Didn't know they had electricity out there let alone vintage Altecs :doh:

Are the 511E's the same size as the 511B's except that they fit the large format drivers?

Same size except for the throat is shorter.They are 511B's with chopped off throats to allow for the 1.4" throat of the large format drivers.They are also damped (Aquaplas) so they don't ring.

Altec modded 511's at the factory by cutting them off where the throat is 1.4" so they are slightly shorter.

They were a great deal at the 250 BIN, sorry i couldn't take the plunge when AB alerted me, i came close.

It'll be interesting to see how far beyond the 250 they go.

Thanks for the info guys. If the bidding doesn't get too crazy those might be a nice entry level purchase to get into a large format Altec DIY project.....

By the way (for anyone who lives out in the "country"), I'm allowed to make fun of "hick" towns because I was born and raised in a hick town until age 9. I wouldn't have traded swimming in the "quarry", playing in the woods, etc. for anything in the world. When I say hick town, I mean it. This town had one bank, one grocery store, a "five and dime" store (remember those?), one restaurant, etc.-- a lot like Mayberry and I loved it (unfortunately I was too young to appreciate the farmers daughters)...... Since I'm from a Hick town (you can take the boy out of the country but you can't take the country out of the boy), I'm allowed to use the "H" word!:snickerpup:

That is a great deal.IMO if the corner wasn't broke on the one horn they would have Sold for much higher ! For such a rare horn these days someone got themselves a great deal regardless of the damage.

Yeah, someone got a bargain. The broken corner of course won't affect the sound quality and that horn still has 7 good mounting points.....

So, I guess they're the Altec equivalent to a sawed off shot gun?
